Quick answer: To write a number in words in the Indian system, group it as thousands, lakhs and crores: 1,23,456 is One Lakh Twenty-Three Thousand Four Hundred Fifty-Six. For a cheque, start with Rupees, show paise after the rupees and end with Only.

Indian numbering groups digits as thousand, lakh and crore. After the first three digits, every group has two digits, so 12345678 is written 1,23,45,678 and read as one crore twenty-three lakh forty-five thousand six hundred seventy-eight.
One lakh is 1,00,000 (one hundred thousand) and one crore is 1,00,00,000 (ten million). Larger amounts keep using crore, for example one hundred crore or one lakh crore.
| Rupees (cheque style) | Rupees One Lakh Twenty-Three Thousand Four Hundred Fifty-Six and Paise Seventy-Eight Only |
|---|---|
| Indian words | one lakh twenty-three thousand four hundred fifty-six point seven eight |
| International words | one hundred twenty-three thousand four hundred fifty-six point seven eight |
There is no single official wording for rupees and paise. This style puts Paise before the number, so 100 rupees 50 paise is never read as 150 paise.
Write the amount in words from the left edge of the space, start with Rupees and end with Only so nothing can be added after it, and write the same amount in figures in the box. Paise go after the rupees, for example Rupees One Thousand Two Hundred Thirty-Four and Paise Fifty-Six Only.
Banks compare the words with the figures. Under Section 18 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, if they differ, the amount in words is the amount payable, but a mismatch can still cause delays or a returned cheque, so make them identical. This is general information, not legal advice.
Indian words use thousand, lakh and crore, which is how amounts are usually read and written in India. International words use thousand, million and billion, which suits documents shared outside India. The same number gives different words, so choose the style the reader expects.

Seven. One crore is 1,00,00,000, which is ten million.
Put the word Paise before the number, after the rupees. For 100 rupees 50 paise, write Rupees One Hundred and Paise Fifty Only. This keeps it from being read as 150 paise.
